…shocked

When I was in intermediate school, we went on a camp, to Kauaeranga Valley. We were all so excited on the trip up there, and it was just fun. Till we got to the camp, went swimming at the river, and came back out with two less people. One boy from my class, and the other boy from the class next door. It was all a big confusion at the time. We were in teams, and it was my team’s turn to help with dinner duty. So we left the swimming hole early…not that I even swam, I remember just being by the water’s side with a friend. Next thing we knew, we’re all being lined up for a head count. It was total confusion. I don’t remember details really, there was a helicopter, and everyone was crying… went went back to school the next day, turning our one week camp in the valley to one scary, sad overnight stay. It didn’t seem right to me being at school after something like that happened, continuing with normal classes. the boy in my class was flown to hospital, but we  heard at school the day after that he didn’t make it.

Now this has happened, at my old school, at a camp I also went to in 5th and 6th form.

It doesn’t seem real

I can’t begin to imagine how the families of those that died are feeling now.

How could two boys drown (I’m guessing that was what happened) on a camp - were’nt you supervised by a teacher or camp leader? Seems a little unreal, the canyoing accident is more realistic, somehow, I guess that happens - although I wouldn’t keep sending my kids to those camps if I lived in NZ. Did you know them personally? I don’t know how many kids I’ve pulled out of the water, some just have no respect for it, even though it can kill us easierly than fire does (and that we have an enourmous respect for…) Hope you”re ok Gracie! o_O

=( That’s incredibly sad. And unfortunate. I can’t imagine how it felt during your camp-turned-overnight-tragedy… Gosh, it sounds traumatising!

I hope the families are okay though… Sometimes it takes unfortunate events to make us appreciate life and the things in it.
